Teofimo Lopez Sr Says They Will Not Consider A Rematch With George Kambosos

On November 27, “Ferocious” George Kambosos Jr (20-0, 10KOs) pulled off a major upset by upending the previously unbeaten and unified lightweight champion Teofimo “El Brooklyn” Lopez Jr (16-1, 12KOs) by split decision. Prior to the two fighters stepping into the ring, it was a forgone conclusion by many that Lopez would simply overwhelm and stop the Australian.

However, those assumptions were wrong DEAD wrong!

Instead what we all witnessed was quite surprising. Kambosos did to Lopez what Lopez did to Vasiliy Lomachenko in the first six rounds of their bout in October of 2020…minus a knockdown. Clearly Kambosos beating Lopez Jr was a bigger upset considering he wasn’t viewed as a tremendously skilled fighter going into the fight. Meanwhile, the former unified champ was riding high on a win over Lomachenko. Although, he may have been a bit too high!

Ironically enough Lomachenko did what many fighters do after suffering a loss. He requested a rematch which had been immediately shot down by Lopez Jr. Lopez Sr was onboard for a Lomachenko rematch, however, he definitely is not for Kambosos.

Speaking with Seconds Out, Lopez Sr trainer dismissed the possibility of a rematch. He instead revealed his son will move up in weight.

“I ain’t having no rematch man. My mistake was leaving my son at 135 for so long you know what I’m saying? Because in this game you gotta knock everybody out. If you don’t knock them out this is what happens, you know?

“It was a complete robbery! We dictated the fight from the beginning; aggressively you know taking all those points. Everybody, everybody in the world knows what happened! Everybody saying he [Lopez] won 9-3, 10-2 you know what I’m saying?

“The whole arena saw it and it was just disgusting you know? I could not believe what they just did to us.”

That’s disappointing to hear considering how confident both the elder and younger Lopez’ were heading into this matchup. What’s even more disappointing is the fact that they won’t give Kambosos credit for a clear victory.

Normally after emotions have cooled down and fighters and trainers have time to reflect, they’re able to give an honest assessment of what went wrong. Going by the statements made by both Lopez’, don’t hold your breath waiting to hear them admit they clearly lost the fight.

Maybe them declining to pursue a rematch says everything we need to know. It also may provide insight on the struggle to continue to make the lightweight limit. Be as it is, there’s a new sheriff in town at lightweight and his name is George Kambosos!
