Demetrius Andrade goes after everyone on team Golovkin
WBO middleweight champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (30-0, 18ko) is tired of being avoided by the other champions in the division. After news of fellow stablemate champion IBF Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (41-1-1, 36ko) not looking to fight him, Boo Boo took to social media attacking everyone on team GGG. Being a champion is supposed to be your big ticket to the big dance. At the very least, it should enable you to skip the line to participate in a unification fight. However, Andrade has never had that luxury, and he continues to struggle in getting his rival-divisional champion in the ring.
Andrade signed with British Promoter Eddie Hearn to fight on the streaming app DAZN back in July 2018. It was part of the introduction announcement in bringing the streaming app into the American market. Many viewed this as a smart move on the part of the talented boxer from Rhode Island.
In 2018, Boo Boo was ready to face then WBO champion “Super B” Billy Joe Saunders. Unfortunately, the infamous nasal spray incident killed the fight after a failed VADA test. Andrade would have to settle for winning the title fighting unknown Walter Kautondokwa after Saunders abruptly vacated the championship.
UNIFICATION FRUSTRATION
The WBO champion has spent the last three years calling out anyone holding a championship, looking to score a big fight. He went after then unified champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez before pursuing WBC champion Jermall “Hit Man” Charlo and GGG. Hearn has been unable to make any of those fights a reality. During an interview with Tha Boxing Voice, the talkative British promoter expressed his frustration.
“For Demetrius, there are three guys he really wants to fight. Obviously, everyone wants to fight Canelo Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin in unification, and Jermall Charlo in unification. I know it is not our fault. It is not Demetrius’ fault. But I kind of feel a responsibility at the same time to deliver for him, and I am doing everything I can. We have taken the barriers away. We’re saying we will fight any platform, we would not overprice ourselves.”
In fairness to Hearn, back in 2020, he brought up the idea of GGG fighting Andrade in a unification since they both operate under the same DAZN umbrella.
“I’ll be saying to DAZN, ‘listen, you have a contract with Demetrius Andrade, you have a contract with Gennady Golovkin. Let’s put these guys together.’”
Andrade is still waiting, and from the recent news from Team GGG, he could be waiting for a long time. The IBF champion made it clear he is ready to fight a trilogy fight with Alvarez should talks breakdown with Premier Boxing Champions in making the undisputed fight with IBF super middleweight champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant.
However, Golovkin is unwilling to fight Andrade before a supposed unification bout with WBA ‘Super’ champion Ryota Murata in December. Boo Boo is not shocked by this and took to social media asking why team GGG has no guts.
