Alycia Baumgardner Reflects on Big Win Over Mikaela Mayer
On October 15, Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner (13-1, 7KOs) stayed true to her word that she would defeat Mikaela Mayer (17-1, 5KOs) to become the women’s 130-pound unified champion. However, the manner in which she did it was surprising to some. Known for her knockout power, The Bomb would instead utilize her overlooked boxing skills to secure a split decision victory.
Making an appearance on The Last Stand Podcast with Brian Custer, she reflected on her victory.
“The narrative was that she took me to deep waters, she took me to the distance, you know it was going to go her way. But the narrative changed! A lot of people didn’t know the set of skills that I had, and I out-boxed the boxer. I used my jab, my feints, my movement, and a lot of people haven’t seen that side. And of course we want to see a knockout; we want to see you put somebody down, but I also have these skills, and I was able to outbox her.”
The fact that Baumgardner was able to showcase a variety of skills in their fight definitely has her being viewed in a different light. With three of the four belts now in her possession, she sits in a position of power with a multitude of options for her to pick and choose from. One thing is for sure: she’s going to be a tough out for anyone, especially if she’s able to keep evolving as a fighter.
As for her rival, Mayer, she has to hope that her words that Baumgardner didn’t really win the first fight can entice her to run it back just to prove the naysayers wrong.
