Billy Joe Saunders says Canelo fight is for all the marbles
For the next few months, the entire boxing community will be debating who will win the mega-fight between unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (55-1-2, 37ko) and WBO champion “Superb” Billy Joe Saunders (30-0, 14ko).
After the unified champion easily dispatched mandatory challenger Anvi Yildirim on February 27, it was announced the Mexican superstar is facing the undefeated British champion for the traditional Cinco de Mayo weekend.
Immediately, social media was buzzing. Saunders believes to have what it takes to dethrone the Mexican champion, despite what some of the naysayers believe. Furthermore, the WBO champion is well aware of how difficult the task at hand will be. He knows he is not just fighting Canelo, but the entire global networking of the sport itself.
Canelo is virtually impossible to beat in a twelve-round fight . Even before his star power took off, he received a draw on one judge’s scorecard against the 2021 Hall of Fame fighter Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather back in 2013. Canelo has since taken over the financial chokehold left behind by the formerpound-for-pound kingpin, which makes him even harder to beat.
ONE FOR ALL
During an interview with 3kingsboxing affiliate Pep Talk UK, the WBO champion dropped a bombshell piece of news. The interviewer first asked if there will be any mind games leading up to the fight.
“No. He has seen and done it all. You can’t play with him [or] his mind, he has been at the highest level. To play mind games with him you will only be clowning on yourself.”
Next, Superb revealed a surprising piece of news that will have the entire boxing community burning up social media with intrigue.
“There is no rematch clause.”
This adds even more drama to the plot, especially considering fighters in Canelo’s position always have rematch clauses in the contract.
Boxing fans can look at this one of two ways. Either the Mexican mega-star is supremely confident in remaining the king, or the pressure is even more intense on Saunders pulling off the impossible.
