Dmitry Bivol Says A Canelo Alvarez Rematch at 168 Eliminates Excuses
WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (21-0, 11KO) constantly gets questioned about a rematch with undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (58-2-2,38KO). Bivol has been steadfast in wanting the undisputed battle with unified champion Artur Beterbiev. However, he is open to a fight with Alvarez at super middleweight to remove all excuses.
During an interview with Bet365, Alvarez mentioned the possibility of doing the rematch for the traditional Cinco De Mayo weekend. Also, he explained how limitations in his hand and shoulder contributed to the reason for losing to Bivol. Alvarez has since had surgery to clear up those issues and is out for revenge.
After defeating mandatory challenger Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez, Bivol was asked about the possibility of going down to the super middle division for Canelo’s undisputed status. He was not interested in a rematch as undisputed is the higher priority.
BIVOL IS OPEN TO FIGHTING ALVAREZ AT 168
In an interview with KO Artist Sports, Bivol reiterated that Canelo opted out of using the rematch clause immediately. Then he explained the reason behind the interest in the fight at super middleweight.
“Canelo had the option for the rematch, and he didn’t use it.”
“Why not at 168? It’s good. If 168, it’s no excuse anymore, you know. I heard some excuses. He said that (175), it’s not his weight class, and then he said that he didn’t get a good training camp. Then he said it was a problem with the arm. It will be great. 168, it’s no excuses.”
With this change in attitude from Bivol, it will be interesting to see how this plays out going into 2023.
