Canelo Alvarez to take pay cut in next fight!
Multi-division world champion and the face of boxing Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2, 36KOs) is looking to return to the ring in September. However, to do so, he’s going to have to take a significant pay cut from what he’s accustomed to.
President of Golden Boy Promotions Eric Gomez told ESPN the following regarding Alvarez’s potential ring return and the possible pay cut.
“He hasn’t agreed to anything. But obviously because there’s not going to be a gate, automatically, he’s going to make less. He gets part of the gate, the sponsors are not around, also. A lot of the sponsors don’t want to do anything right now.”
“So if he fights, because there’s no gate, he’s going to make less. That’s if he fights, if he decides to fight. But he hasn’t decided, yet.”
It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused major issues health wise and business wise. With no fans in attendance to buy tickets and sponsors not willing to commit to events, it’s hard to imagine Alvarez making his typical seven figure paydays. Not only that, he’s still in search of an opponent. As we’ve been reporting, Sergiy Derevyanchenko (13-2, 10KOs), WBA “Super” Super middleweight champion Callum Smith (27-0, 19KOs), and John Ryder (28-5, 16KOs) are all still in the running to get the fight.
With him eyeing a return to the ring for Mexican independence weekend, an announcement could come at any point.
