Chantelle Cameron Easily Fends Off Patricia Berguhlt
Former undisputed junior welterweight champion, “El Capo” Chantelle Cameron (20-1, 8KO) returned to the ring for a WBC interim title defense. The challenger was former WBC junior middleweight champion Patricia Berguhlt (17-2, 4KO).
After losing her titles to Katie Taylor in a rematch by a controversial majority decision in November 2023, Cameron returned to defeat Elhem Mekhaled to capture the junior welterweight interim title in July 2024. She aims to get a trilogy with Taylor to prove who the superior fighter is but could not look passed the Swedish former champion. Berguhlt had something to prove in her own right; the opportunity to become a world champion again.
El Capo has always been a special talent, which really became evident when she dethroned Taylor in their first fight. On paper, this bout seemed to be an even matchup. However, avid followers of women’s boxing would give several reasons why Berguhlt was over-matched from the start.
Cameron entered the fight guns blazing! While the Swede attempting to stay on the outside behind a jab, the former undisputed champion walked her down with ease. Although, Berguhlt had moments landing straight right-hands behind her jab as Cameron moved into mid-range. The interim champ’s face also showed the damage. Nevertheless, Berguhlt showed damage from the constant pressure and accurate punching El Capo displayed. This caused the challenger to resort to more retreating on her back-foot than being the fight to the champ.
Cameron had little trouble winning every round en route to an easy unanimous decision. Hopefully, she will be back in line to get the winner of Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano II.
