Chris Colbert v Yuriorkis Gamboa set for July 3
Veteran fighter Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-4, 18KOs) will return to the ring on July 3. Nowadays it seems as if he is the go-to veteran to face for upcoming fighters at 130 or 135. The former WBA/IBF featherweight champion has gotten opportunity after opportunity as of late with no success. His most recent ring outings have come against WBA “regular” lightweight champion Gervonta Davis and WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney. He would lose both fights. Against Davis in December of 2019, he went out on his Shield in the 12th and final round. He would suffer a torn Achilles’ tendon for his effort. In against Haney, he was simply out-boxed.
HIS LATEST OPPORTUNITY!
In possibly his final world title opportunity, the Cuban gold medalist will attempt to wrestle away the WBA Interim junior lightweight championship belt away from Chris “Prime Time” Colbert (15-0, 6KOs). With Gamboa’s recent struggles to show he can compete with top-tier talent, a rising contender like Colbert who was named 3Kings Boxing Prospect of the Year for 2020 will still end up being a gross mismatch. However, this will be a good name on the resume of the 24 year-old.
PRIME TIME AWAITS!
The Brooklyn native has a bright future and assuming he dusts off the ancient Gamboa, greener pastures await. Looking to establish himself as the man in a growing junior lightweight division, Colbert is going to need to top performances of his counterparts. Not known as an explosive power puncher, he has built a reputation as boxer who can counter as well as be aggressive and show sneaky power.
Colbert already feels he’s among the top of his division. Thus, he needs to emphatically beat down and retire Gamboa. On July 3, we may see an early fireworks show by way of the fast combinations exploding off the head of the aged Cuban.
