Crawford Pokes Holes In Canelo’s Rationale for Not Fighting Him

At the current moment, unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KO’s) has started his official press tour for his upcoming September 14. On that date, he will battle boastful contender Edgar Berlanga. Yet, despite the light being shined on Berlanga, an overwhelming amount of fans and media are still questioning why Alvarez is not entertaining a duel with four-division champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (41-0, 31 KO’s).

When asked why he is not willing to take on Crawford, who is a two-division undisputed champion, Canelo insists that he is too small. Yet, in a recent Q&A with Sean Zittel, Bud simultaneously expressed his thoughts as well as poked holes in Alvarez’s rationales.

“It’s crazy and makes me laugh with all the antics that Canelo is doing and saying in the media and whatnot. About the size and he won’t get no credit and all these type of things but Canelo been fighting smaller guys his whole career. Canelo been making his own catchweight for years; you know Canelo fought a smaller Mayweather, Canelo fought a smaller Amir Khan, he fought Jermall Charlo and I’m pretty sure he didn’t make as much money with all those guys, expect Mayweather, even Berlanga right now, that he will with me!”

When looking at his resume, Canelo indeed does have a ledger filled with smaller fighters that he has taken on. Even when taking Benavidez into consideration, Canelo relentlessly stated that he hadn’t done anything in the sport to warrant a fight. The trouble with this is immediately turning around and accepting a fight with Berlanga – whose professional accomplishments vastly pale in comparison.

With the boxing public’s desire to see Canelo face Benavidez or Crawford being so keen, there is a great deal more pressure on Canelo to perform well against Berlanga. If Alvarez allows his upcoming Puerto Rican foe to enjoy too much success, then this negative slant toward him in the boxing consciousness will only increase. For this reason, the upcoming September 14 dance date will be especially important for Canelo.
