Look For David Morrell Jr to Have A Breakout Year in 2022
In boxing, fighters often go under the radar, and the boxing community is none the wiser. However, fighters start to creep up slowly until it is time for their breakout. WBA Regular super middleweight champion David Morrell (6-0, 5 KOs) is one of those fighters that boxing fans should pay attention to this year. Enough so, that he has earned the title of 3Kings Boxing Fighter to Look Out For in 2022.
In 2020, the Cuban defeated then-undefeated Lennox Allen for the WBA interim title in his third professional fight. Moreover, his victory paid off in a big way as he was later elevated to regular champion status a year later.
THE BREAKOUT YEAR
In 2021, Morrell started capturing the attention of some inside the boxing community after his first-round annihilation of undefeated rough Mexican fighter Mario Abel Cazares. Fighting in the main event slot live on Fox from his adopted hometown of Minneapolis, Morrell flatlined Cazares with two pulverizing straight left hands. The crowd roared in jubilation, and fans took to social media with newly created knockout memes.
In his next performance again fighting in Minnesota, he laced up the gloves against the much taller Alantez Fox. Keep in mind that Fox scored a knockdown on the elusive WBO middleweight champion, Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade.
The champ wasted little time establishing his superiority. His educated right-hand jab and evasive upper body movement had Fox off-balance from the beginning of the fight.
In round four, he landed a punishing left hook that sent Fox crumbling to the canvas. Despite beating the count, the former title contender was getting knocked from corner to corner like a rag doll. Fox’s father/trainer had seen enough and decided to save his son from further punishment.
Once viewed as the best-kept secret in boxing, Morrell’s two knockout performances under the Premier Boxing Champions banner on Fox sports gained the boxing community’s attention.
WHAT WILL 2022 BRING?
When looking at the division, opportunities to fight for a vacant title could come if undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez leaves the division. Morrell could fight WBA #1 ranked contender Aidos Yerbossynuly, WBO #1 ranked fighter Zach Parker or take on some of the bigger names like former IBF champ Caleb Plant, former middleweight IBF champion Daniel Jacobs or two-time WBC champ David Benavidez.
Also as being a big super middleweight, the Cuban sensation could move up to light heavyweight and fight WBA Super champion Dmitry Bivol or WBA #2 contender Gilberto Ramirez.
The possibilities are endless for the Morrell. It will be interesting to see his career blossom even more this year.
