Errol Spence Jr Breaks His Silence on Upcoming Fight Against Yordenis Ugas

It’s pretty much a given that a welterweight unification will happen between unified WBC/IBF world champion Errol Spence Jr (27-0, 21 KOs) and WBA ‘super’ champion Yordenis Ugas (27-4, 12 KOs). The only question now is, when can the public expect it?

SPENCE SPEAKS

On a PBC pay-per-view event on January 1 in Hollywood, Florida, Ugas said it would take place in March or April. Spence has now confirmed that assessment. According to the UK’s Daily Mirror, the 31-year-old took to social media and said this on Instagram Live:

“The fight’s in April, man down, strap season. He already know what time it is.”

Up until now, Spence has kept things close to the vest regarding the fight. The upcoming bout against Spence will be his first fight since defeating former two-division Danny Garcia in December 2020. He’s been on the shelf rehabbing from a detached retina in his left eye suffered while preparing to fight Manny Pacquiao in August of 2020.

LINGERING QUESTIONS

Physically, it’s been a tumultuous last couple of years for the talented southpaw. It’s not only the matter of his left eye. Going into the fight with Ugas, the issue of Spence’s overall health is a question among many fans and pundits.

The win over Garcia came after a sixteen-month layoff following a horrific one-car accident that left him in serious condition. With back-to-back significant injuries, one has to wonder how much has that taken out of him? In short, is Errol Spence the same physical force that he was before the setbacks? Ugas is the kind of opponent who will expose what he truly has left.
