Juan Francisco Estrada to Battle Argi Cortes on September 3!

There have been many rumblings and speculation about Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada (42-3, 28 KOs). 2022 has been filled with unanswered questions about when and who he will fight next. That has finally been answered. At a press event in Mexico, Zanfer Promotions announced that Estrada returns to the ring on September 3 in his hometown of Hermosillo, Mexico. He will face Argi Cortes (23-2-2, 10 KOs) at the Centro de Usos Multiples. During the event, Estrada was ecstatic to get back into action.

HAPPY TO RETURN TO THE RING

“I’m very excited about this card. We will finally step inside the ring after more than a year. I expect a difficult opponent. I know Argi Cortes will come to the fight well-prepared, and he will have someone in his corner who knows everything and with a lot of experience in (trainer) Don Nacho Beristain, but we’ve had a great training camp. I’ve enjoyed it because for the first time in six years I’ve trained without any ailments or injuries, and that has me very motivated.”

The lead-up to this announcement came with plenty of outside-the-ring drama for the 32-year-old. It included withdrawing from a trilogy fight with Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (51-3, 41 KOs) earlier this year after contracting COVID-19. Later, Estrada was stripped of the WBA Super junior bantamweight title for bypassing a fight with WBA Regular champ Joshua Franco (18-1-2, KOs).

Instead, he will battle a Cortes who is currently riding a 21-fight winning streak. However, a closer at his record reveals that many of the victories during that streak have been against mediocre and substandard opposition.

For Estrada, this is his first fight since a disputed rematch win against Gonzalez in March 2021. With eyes on finally staging a trilogy with Gonzalez this fall, the upcoming contest against Cortes is merely a precursor toward Estrada-Gonzalez III.
