Ryan Garcia Eyes WBA Title Fight with Rolly Romero

With all the drama of fight week now behind him, top junior welterweight “King” Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20KO) is setting his sights on a potential world title shot against WBA Champion in Recess Rolando “Rolly” Romero (15-1, 13KO).

Following his successful return with a stoppage over the hard-hitting Mexican Oscar Duarte, Garcia, who had previously called for a fight with Romero, reiterated his challenge in the ring.

“If Rollies want that, bring it on Rollies! I know you talk a lot; Let’s get that going Rollies! Where you at? You got beat up by that old dude, we know what happened!”

Doubling down on wanting the fight in the post-fight press conference, Garcia poked fun at Romero’s somewhat unconventional championship status.

“I want Rolly, just to be honest. I mean, I feel like it’s a fun fight. He’s an aggressive, crazy dude. The lead-up would be crazy . . . He has a title, technically. So yeah, let’s do it.”

However, the road to a showdown with the WBA Champion may not be immediate. After a controversial victory over 40-year-old Ismael Barroso, Romero quickly called for a fight with Garcia.

The press conference featuring Garcia versus Romero promises to be worth the price of admission, but the winner of Ohara Davies versus Barroso may have a say in the matter.

Originally slated to fight on Garcia’s undercard for the WBA Interim title, Davies versus Barroso got postponed due to the Brit having visa issues. Additionally, the WBA has expressed that the winner gets the first crack at the WBA Champion in Recess upon his return from injury.

Making this fight happen will require serious maneuvering by both parties, and boxing fans can only sit back and wait to see what unfolds.
