The entire boxing community is still trying to figure what we all just saw when unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez (16-0, 12ko), dethroned arguably the top pound for pound fighter Vasyl “Hi-tech” Lomachenko (14-2, 10ko). Shortly after the fight, during the post-fight interview, the newly crowned unified champion was asked about his next move. Well, in true flamboyant fashion, he dropped the name of arch-rival WBC champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (24-0, 15ko).

THE BACKSTORY OF AN ONGOING FUED

Now, if you follow boxing, the only way you would not be aware of the hostile tension between these two fighters is if you have been living a social media-free life. Furthermore, there is a long, well-documented history between the unified champion and his rival, the WBC champion.

Lopez enjoyed calling out his nemesis and referring to him as the “Email Champion”.

Moreover, given their history, no one should be surprised that Lopez took a shot at Haney. Furthermore, out of pure frustration, he took to social media with a message Haney.

“Shut the fuck up kid, damn you annoying!

Then there was the time when he called out the WBC champion and British promoter Eddie Hearn for not trying to make a unification bout. This prompted a harsh response from his rival claiming he was going to beat the shit out of the then IBF champion.

LOOKING AT THE FUTURE

There is not enough ink to write down the number of outbursts that both men have traded over the course of the years. However, the unified champion mentioned possibly fighting his rival. As usual, Haney was listening and pounced like a predator on his prey over social media.

Of course, Hearn had to get in on the act as well. He made it clear that after the WBC champion’s upcoming bout, they can definitely make the fight happen next.
