Devin Haney Evades Legal Trouble Over LA Gun Charges
In a fortunate turn of events, undisputed lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (30-0, 15 KO’s) has successfully sidestepped a bit of legal trouble. As 3Kings Boxing previously reported, the undefeated fighter was recently arrested on a gun charge in LA. After being pulled over by police for failing to signal before a lane change, a gun was found in the vehicle.
Yet, while the gun was registered to him, the firearm was not on his person or in his possession. Haney was a passenger in the vehicle, sitting in the back seat, at the time of the arrest. Nevertheless, Haney was still arrested because the gun was registered to him. Now, as reported by ESPN, all charges have been dropped on the grounds of insufficient evidence. This is wonderful news for Haney, 24, who has never had any previous legal woes.
BACK TO THE REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAM
Now that this unfortunate episode is officially in his rearview mirror, the Californian can focus totally on his boxing career. While there has been no official announcement, all signs are pointing to Haney staging a late-year duel with WBC super lightweight champion Regis “Rougarou” (29-1, 24 KO’s). This is a highly anticipated battle as it would stand as Haney’s first fight in the 140-pound division. It has come with a bit of hubbub attached as some, including Prograis, are taking issue with the fact that Haney wants to be allowed to retain his titles at 135 while he competes at super lightweight.
In his last match, The Dream snatched up a career best win over three-division champion Vasiliy Lomachenko. It was a bout that Haney chased for years. Once in the ring, the undisputed champion had to dig deep to win a narrow and highly competitive prizefight. Now, with Loma and the potential legal trouble out of the way, Haney has an exceedingly bright future in the sport.
