Jaron Ennis is Better Served Moving Up to 154
Unified welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis needs to start planning to move up to 154. On April 12 in Atlantic City, Ennis stopped Eimantas Stanionis in six rounds to become the unified welterweight champion. Afterward, Ennis was mum on his future. His future lies in the junior middleweight division.
What would excite the boxing public are fights against Vergil Ortiz Jr, and unified junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora.
In 2024, Ennis was accused of ducking Ortiz after pulling out of negotiations. Now is the time for them to get back to the negotiating table. Both fighters are young, unbeaten, and approaching their physical peak. It’s a matchup that boxing fans have talked about on social media and various boxing podcasts. The winner would be in prime position to face Fundora.
This should not be a difficult decision for Ennis and his promoter, Eddie Hearn. Sure, Boots could stay around and seek another unification against WBO champion Brian Norman Jr. But the reality is that fights with Ortiz and Fundora have a higher profile, and they would garner more coins to Ennis’ back account. Now is the time for them to take things to the next level, and that is at junior middleweight.
