Gervonta Davis Narrowly Evades Defeat by Lamont Roach!
Following a very lively fight, WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (30-0-1, 28 KO’s) narrowly escaped with a majority decision draw versus Lamont “The Reaper” Roach (25-1-2, 10 KO’s).
Out of the gate, Roach took the fight straight to Davis. Against all previous advice, he stood in the danger zone for the majority of the night. To his credit, The Reaper was able to absorb Tank’s power well throughout the contest. Yet, even with this being said, Roach routinely slipped, parried and blocked the greater bulk of Tank’s offense.
In fact, Roach was having so much success hitting and not getting hit that Davis clearly became unraveled mentally on several occasions. Davis ate a shot while talking to the ref, was warned for a low blow and mysteriously took a knee in the ninth round. For some odd reason, veteran referee Steve Willis did not dock Davis the point for the action.
Over the course of twelve rounds, Roach dictated the terms of the duel and landed the greater volume of punches. Unfortunately for him, The Reaper was not awarded the thrilling upset victory. Instead Roach was served an unsatisfactory majority decision draw with the scores of 115-113 (Davis) and 114–114 (twice). 3Kings Boxing felt that Roach should have gotten his hand raised.
