Nina Hughes Open to Unification Bout with Dina Thorslund
Unification bouts are always a good thing. One that could be in the works is a battle between women’s bantamweight champions Dina Thorslund and Nina Hughes.
LET’S MAKE A DEAL
Thorslund (20-0, 8 KOs) is the WBC and WBO champion at 118, while Hughes (6-0, 2 KOs) is the reigning WBA bantamweight champion. The unified champion took to social media to call for a fight with Hughes. After being called out, the WBA belt holder decided to respond.
A two-division champion, Thorslund has dominated the competition. Many avid followers of women’s boxing rank the 30-year-old as one of the best female boxers in the world. In her last outing in September 2023, she became the unified champion with a ten-round unanimous decision victory over Yuliahn Luna Avila.
Hughes is very much a late bloomer. She didn’t turn pro until December 2021, at the advanced age of 39, but has risen quickly in the bantamweight ranks. In November 2022, Hughes won the WBA title with a unanimous decision victory over Jamie Mitchell. Her first title defense was a unanimous decision victory over Katie Healy in June 2023.
The chances of a Thorslund versus Hughes fight are very likely. Both ladies want it to happen. Hughes fights on the banner of Matchroom Promotions. The company has heavily invested in women’s boxing over the years and also wants to put Hughes in a unification fight. Given that backdrop, do not be surprised if it occurs at some point in 2024, possibly in Hughes’s home country of England.
