Shawn Porter and PBC Loyalty

When welterweight Shawn “Showtime” Porter (30-3-1, 17 KO’s) appears on FOX this August 22 to face Sebastian Formella (22-0, 10 KO’s), it will not be must-see-TV for many fight fans. Porter himself would much rather take on one of the other champions or proven monsters in the division.

Nevertheless, it was his sense of loyalty that compelled Porter to compete as soon as the sport was resumed. Showtime was aware that he could be saddled with a lackluster adversary to do so. Yet, getting back on the big stage to represent was a larger priority for the native Ohioan. He shared the following with Fight Hype.

“With this fight right here, I came to my dad and told him as soon as this quarantine is up and we are able to get in the ring I want to be one of the first guys getting in the ring for PBC. And I told my dad that I am taking the responsibility to boxing and PBC and FOX in my hands.”

“I think that I am the best representative for boxing right now to get in the ring and do what I do. And when I get in the ring you’re always going to be excited, you’re always going to see some great action and you’re definitely going to see a great human being in the ring myself. So that’s basically why I am doing this.”

IN AN IDEAL WORLD

Now, had Porter been allowed to select whoever he wanted to fight minus any restrictions things would be quite different!

“You know what, I never saw myself fighting Sebastian Formella; didn’t know him before the fight was made. So for me I can always say what I wanted to do but I don’t know what’s going to happen.

To keep it plain and simple Keith Thurman, Manny Pacquiao, Danny Garcia, right now the fight with Terence Crawford at the moment is still on the back burner but that’s the fight that I think can still be made out there.

So I am interested in big names, I don’t think those big names are as interested in me! But we’ll take what they give us and myself, my team and God will do the rest.”

Hopefully next time we see Porter after the Formella scrap he is tangling with someone from his personal wish list.
