Gary Russell Jr. Gearing Up for a 2023 Ring Return!
2022 has been a difficult year for former WBC 126-pound champion “Mr.” Gary Russell Jr. (31-2, 18 KOs). The eldest child of the Russell clan would lose his title in January via a majority decision against Mark Magsayo. Prior to the fight with Magsayo, Russell injured his right shoulder a couple weeks earlier while sparring. After the bout, the former champion would go on to have surgery to repair the issue.
Things would only get worse as he and his family would suffer the loss of his father, Gary Russell Sr. Russell Sr. would pass away in May after complications with diabetes that resulted in him having two strokes and having to have his left foot amputated. However, that didn’t stop Russell Jr. or the rest of his brothers from continuing on in the sport their father introduced them to and helped establish them as respectable fighters.
LOOKING FORWARD TO 2023!
Not one to dwell on things, Russell Jr. is apparently ready to return to the ring! In a video posted on social media, the former WBC featherweight champion let it be known while hitting the mitts that, come 2023, he’s back.
“2023, I’m back! You motherfuckers better get out of the way!”
A short and simple message from the 34-year-old. At this time, there’s no timetable set on when he’ll make his 2023 ring debut, but the fact that he’s back in the gym training and appears to be healthy signals that his recovery from shoulder surgery is going well. At one point, Russell wasn’t sure if his arm would ever be 100 percent healthy again. We here at 3Kings Boxing will continue to monitor the story and provide updates once they become available.
