Are Tensions Heating Up between Jamel Herring and Shakur Stevenson?

WBO World Junior Lightweight champion Jamel Herring (23-2, 11 KOs) is taking some downtime following a career-best stoppage win over former two-time world champion Carl Frampton on April 3. The 35-year-old from Coram, New York is also contemplating his next fight. Herring wants to go for a unification fight against the current WBC World Junior Lightweight champion Oscar Valdez. However, as a world champion, there are mandatory obligations that you must abide by. That means at some point, he must fight WBO 130-pound mandatory contender and former WBO World Featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson (15-0, 8 KOs). The young and hungry Stevenson has not been shy about his desire to fight Herring.

Currently preparing for his upcoming June 12 fight against Jeremiah Nakathila for the WBO World ‘Interim’ Junior Lightweight title, Stevenson had a recent visitor at his training camp. That visitor was one Jamel Herring.

WARNING SHOTS

Friendly trash talk was exchanged. Both were smiling throughout, but the former featherweight champ made sure to let Herring know what would happen should they eventually fight.

“Make sure you know I’mma whoop yo ass. I’mma fuck this nigga up. Make sure he know that.”

The banter continued later on at a restaurant where Stevenson confronted Herring while he was enjoying a meal. Afterward, the two went back and forth with each other about what happened. Stevenson would accuse Herring of being shook. The champ said quite the contrary.

Outside the ring, they come off as friends and have genuine respect for one another, deep down. That goes out the window when it comes to a world title. Boxing frenemies can quickly become heated rivals. Whatever is going on between Jamel Herring and Shakur Stevenson can only be resolved one way – in the ring.
