Is Alycia Baumgardner Better in Mikaela Mayer Rematch or Choi Bout?
Newly crowned unified champion Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner (13-1, 7KOs) has settled her bad blood with bitter rival Mikaela Mayer (17-1, 5KOs). By beating Mayer via split decision, she came into possession of former unified champion Mayer’s two straps. Now her eyes are on the ultimate prize of undisputed in a bout against WBA Champ Hyun-Mi Choi. The Bomb made it crystal clear that no rematch would be given to her bitter rival.
Now the holder of three of the four belts at 130, Baumgardner is ready to collect the fourth one. In doing so, she would accomplish the ultimate goal of becoming an undisputed champion. However, her bout with Mayer was a close and competitive fight. There are many who feel she should give Mayer a rematch.
WHAT SHOULD SHE DO?
In a fair world, a rematch would be best as it’s clear these two ladies have unfinished business. However, Baumgardner is under no obligation to rematch her bitter rival. Moreover, the champion should not be criticized if she stays true to her word and seeks a bout with WBA champ Choi instead.
A win over Choi would put Baumgardner in the history books forever. A rematch with Mayer would simply give her a chance to prove that her win wasn’t a fluke and that she’s the superior fighter.
