Porter reveals negotiations have started for Thurman for a rematch in 2019!
WBC welterweight champion Shawn Porter (29-2,17KO) reveals his team is currently in negotiations with WBA Super champion Keith Thurman (28-0,22KO). This comes as somewhat of a surprise due to Thurman being on a 19 month layoff (and counting). Moreover, rumors of him fighting the likes of Jessie Vargas, Josesito Lopez or the #1 ranked WBA contender Alexander Besputin for his comeback appearance circulated throughout the boxing world.
As of now the terms of Thurman’s return are uncertain. It’s expected Thurman may want a tune-up prior to taking a dangerous unification bout with so much time away from the ring. A similar path Andre Ward took before facing Sergey Kovalev the first time could be in play here. Ward took on Paul Smith, Sullivan Barrera and Alexander Brand after a 1 1/2 year layoff before facing Kovalev.
