Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua Rematch Set For June!
Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (19-0, 13KOs) has confirmed he will face off against Anthony Joshua (24-2, 22KOs) in a rematch of their September 2021 fight. This news follows his receiving permission from Ukraine’s sports minister to extricate himself from his country’s current war with Russia.
Usyk and former world champion Vasyl Lomachenko volunteered to assist in Ukraine’s defense. Both men received high praise for their actions, as they put lucrative big fight opportunities on the back burner. While Lomachenko will remain and fight the good fight, Usyk will leave the battlefields and prepare for a different type of fight.
Last September, Usyk, a two-division world champion, put on a masterful performance against Joshua. An underdog heading into the fight, Usyk out-boxed, hurt, and completely outclassed Joshua, a two-time heavyweight champion on his way to heavyweight glory.
The heavyweight released a statement via video on his Instagram page, which was translated into English. Here, he let the fans know that he had now begun training for the highly anticipated rematch.
With the rematch officially happening, Team Joshua can breathe a sigh of relief. The former champion is surely hungry for revenge. However, one must ask, while he’s on board for the rematch, what will Usyk’s mental state be in training camp and, more importantly, come fight night?
