David Avanesyan v Conor Benn being eyed by Frank Warren

Frank Warren has major plans for newly signed welterweight contender David “Ava” Avanesyan (28-3-1, 16KOs). Ranked #6 in the WBO, #12 in the IBF, #7 in the WBC and #12 in the WBA, the Russian born fighter is riding a five-fight win streak. He’s had a terrific 2021, thus far. Back in February, he pulled off an upset when he defeated previously unbeaten prospect Josh “Pretty Boy” Kelly (10-1-1, 6KOs) by sixth round TKO. He more recently followed that victory up with another stoppage victory over Liam “Dynamo” Taylor (23-2-1, 11KOs) in two rounds on October 2.

Speaking to iFL TV, Warren revealed it’s Conor Benn (19-0, 12KOs) he’s targeting as Avanesyan’s next opponent.

“Look, we want to do it. We’ve made him an offer and we’re waiting for him to come back. It haven’t come back yet.”

“It’s a quite lucrative offer for him, so we’ll see where it goes. It’s a great fight, why not? Conor is a decent fighter and that is a big fight, a great fight. One I’d certainly like to see.”

A CONTEST OF CONTENDERS

Conor Benn is coming off a dominant unanimous decision win over longtime contender Adrian Granados on September 4. That fight served as his second consecutive step up. He previously fought Samuel Vargas, stopping him in one round. Benn, who’s ranked #8 in the IBF and #10 in the WBC and WBA, is a fighter that’s improving with each and every fight.

A fight between him and Avanesyan would be a terrific battle. Both men possess knockout power. They also have fan-friendly styles, and with world title opportunities a ways away, a battle between two world rated welterweights would be highly intriguing.

Let’s hope that Benn and his team are receptive to the offer Frank Warren sent over and this fight gets done.
