Longtime champion looks to add another belt
Earlier this year Donnie Nietes (41-1-4, 23KO’s) announced that he would vacate his IBF Flyweight Title and move up in weight to Super Flyweight. With the announcement the WBO announced that Nietes would be the number one contender to the title vacated by Naoya Inoue.
The WBO has now ordered that Nietes face Aston Palicte (24-2, 20KO’s) for the vacant WBO Super Flyweight Title. Nietes will be going for his fourth title in a different weight class. If a deal can be reached Palicte will be going for his first major title, as the fellow native of the Philippines is on a 4 fight win streak.
Nietes, who hasn’t loss a fight since 2004, looks to add another belt in arguably boxing’s best division. Nietes was last in the ring in February where he dismantled Juan Carlos Reveco and got a 7th round KO victory. Nietes at age 35, is still going strong and should be the favored, if a deal can be reached.
