Carlos Adames Erases Juan Montiel in 3 to Win WBC Interim Title!
For their latest at bat, middleweight boxers Carlos Adames (22-1, 17 KO’s) and Juan “Juanito” Montiel (23-6-2, 23 KO’s) went to war. To date, neither competitor has exactly set the world on fire. Adames, who is ranked #1 (WBC), #3 (WBO) and #6 (WBA), got his biggest career win versus Sergiy Derevyanchenko when Derevyanchenko was coming off a year-long layoff. Not only was the Ukrainian the best name on Adames’ ledger, that match stood as a WBC title eliminator. That was actually the Dominican’s last bout.
The backstory is a bit grimmer for Montiel. While it’s true that all his victories came by way of stoppage, none of those opponents moved the needle in boxing circles. In fact, outside of an extremely frazzled James Kirkland, Juanito has lost to every significant name he has faced. This includes fighters such as Jaime Munguia and WBC 160-pound champion Jermall Charlo. Despite giving Charlo a bit of trouble, Montiel, who is ranked #7 (WBC), had yet to prove that he really belonged on the top level.
EASY WORK FOR ADAMES!
With the WBC Interim 160-pound title on the line, the number one ranked contender, Carlos Adames, came out razor sharp! While the first round saw both men get booed for their lack of output, things would quickly change. Round two saw Adames get more aggressive and let his hands go as he ripped right hooks to the head and body of Montiel, who had nothing to offer.
As round three arrived, it was clear that Adames was looking to make a huge statement by ending this fight early. After landing a brutal right hook that hurt Montiel, Adames would jump on his opponent and put the finishing touches on a very good performance. The right hook to the head and left uppercut would force the referee to jump in and stop the fight.
In his post-fight interview, he let it be known that he’s not only ready for WBC champion Jermall Charlo, but also the other champions in the division. After tonight’s performance, he’s clearly put the division on notice that he’s someone to be respected!
