Sergiy Derevyanchenko Loses to Carlos Adames in Return

After well over a year of inactivity, middleweight boxer Sergiy “The Technician” Derevyanchenko (13-4, 10 KO’s) staged a disappointing return to the ring. He did so by losing a hard-fought majority decision to Carlos Adames (21-1, 16 KO’s). The key middleweight contest and WBC title eliminator took place at Staples Center.

Derevyanchenko was looking to get one last crack at a world title and this defeat certainly didn’t help! It’s already been a bit of a hard-luck career for the 36-year-old. He’s regarded as a solid and credible 160-pounder. However, he’s had three world title chances and come up short on each occasion.

In October of 2018, he lost by split decision to Daniel Jacobs for the vacant IBF world middleweight belt. He received a second opportunity for the vacant IBF belt but was on the receiving end of a controversial loss to Gennady Golovkin in October 2019. He was also defeated by current WBC champ Jermall Charlo in September of 2020. It will be telling to see where he goes from here.

As for Adames, his star is definitely on the rise. Heading into this prizefight, many fans and pundits viewed the 27-year-old as decent, but nothing special. His only prior significant fight was a defeat to former WBO world junior middleweight champ Patrick Texiera. Now that he has collected the Technician’s scalp and is one step closer to a title shot, let’s see what the Dominican can come up with next.

TEN ROUNDS OF PAIN

After a rather dreary opening round, the match exploded into an action-fight early in the second. The two men engaged in an open firefight throughout to the final bell. Adames definitely got the better of the action, seeming to have buzzed the Technician at the beginning and end of the period. The two dueled at range during the fourth but still maintained a brisk pace.

With the coming of the fifth, Derevyanchenko appeared to buzz Adames for the first significant instance. Yet, at the same time, the Dominican landed his fair share of detrimental leather. The sixth was the slowest round of the night with not much notable action to speak of. By the end of the seventh, they slipped back in the phonebooth and resumed hate-boxing. In fact, the two men battled like their lives depended on it down the stretch.

When the scorecards were read, Derevyanchenko dropped a majority decision loss to a very elated Carlos Adames. Naturally, he was disappointed but when asked, the Ukrainian did not give any indication that he was ready to hang the gloves up.
