Efe Ajagba Defeats Razvan Cojanu
After one brutally one-sided fight, the hard-hitting Efe Ajagba (13-0, 11 KO’s) stopped Razvan Cojanu (17-7, 9 KO’s) in the ninth round. From the very outset of the PBC on FOX co-main-event, it was apparent that Cojanu was not in the same league with Ajagba. Outside of landing the occasional hard shot, Cojanu was never able to mount any sort of meaningful or consistent offense.
On the other hand Efe Ajagba was able to display a number of new weapons in his expanding arsenal. While the Nigerian is best known for his power, in this fight he choose to focus on his jab, volume and combination punching. The change in tactics worked like a charm.
THE BREAKDOWN
In the first and second round, Ajagba controlled the early action with little more than his jab and straight-right. With the coming of the third round, Ajagba took his left hook off the leash and it immediately started chewing on the side of Cojanu’s head. And by the fourth, Ajagba was comfortably throwing combinations with regularity.
The bout hit something of a lull when Ajagba took his foot off the gas until Cojanu caught his second wind. After gathering himself a bit, the Romanian had his brief moments of success. In fact, if there was any real critique of Ajagba, it is his super leaky defense.
Throughout the fight, Cojanu consistently touched Ajagba on the button with solid shots. If he had more pop, it might have been a drastically different outcome. However, he didn’t have that power. So he just kept taking a thumping until he was finally forced to take a knee in round 8. After rising at the count of nine, a badly bruised and distressed looking Cojanu limped into the ninth.
Within the first thirty seconds of the ninth period, Cojanu found himself pent to the ropes, getting pummeled and taking another knee. This time however, the bout was waved off extending, Efe Ajagba’s undefeated streak by one more notch.
