Ali Akhmedov lands one punch to end Andrew Hernandez’ night!

Well there is not much to report here! The highly touted super middleweight Ali Akhmedov (16-0, 12) made extremely short work of late replacement Andrew “Hurricane” Hernandez (20-7-2, 9 KO’s).

The two met on the under-card of Gennady Golovkin vs Sergiy Derevyanchenko, in Madison Square Garden.

In the first minute of the first round, Akhmedov ends then night with his very first punch! After the two circled and briefly sized one another up, Akhmedov launched a thudding straight right that landed flush on Hurricane’s left ear. The blow sent him down to one knee. Hernandez did manage to make it to his feet, although he was very unstable once upright.

Referee Eddie Claudio wasted no time in calling a halt to the contest. Hernandez was called in for this bout with just two weeks’ notice. His cold performance and soft midsection reflected this to perfection.

The light night in the office will allow for a quick turnaround for Akhmedov if he chooses to do so. During the post-fight interview he said that even though he is currently campaigning in the super middleweight division, he is more than ready and willing to go up to light heavyweight.

It will be interesting to see what the native of Kazakhstan does next. This bout served as the first defense of Akhmedov’s WBC international silver super middleweight title.
