Gabriela Alaniz Defeats WBO Champ Tamara Demarco & Opens Door for Unification
In boxing, becoming the champion is hard, but staying the champion is even harder. Newly crowned WBO flyweight champion Gabriela “La Chucky” Alaniz (13-0, 5KO) recently ran over the former champion Tamara Demarco (10-5) in seven rounds.
Both fighters were fighting in front of the Argentine crowd and were ready to put on a show. Alaniz, out the gate, went to work sending the champion down to the canvas twice from two powerful right hands in the first round. Alaniz kept the pressure on and those power punches coming until Demarco’s corner finally stopped the beating in round seven.
A MAJOR UNIFICATION NEXT?
La Chucky’s victory has thrust her into the spotlight. In her first try, Alaniz won the title while keeping her undefeated record intact. Looking at the landscape, in case there is no rematch, the newly crowned champion has two high-profile options. She could look to take on unified champion Marlen Esparza (12-1, 1KO) in a major unification bout.
Esparza is the top fighter in the flyweight division and will most definitely want the fight to take place in the United States. Alaniz has never fought outside of her country, and that could be the biggest hiccup preventing that fight from happening next.
The smart money would be a huge hometown unification against fellow undefeated countrywoman and IBF champion Leonela Paola Yudica (17-0-3). It would be a massive fight between the two top Argentinian champions, and fans would pack the stadium in droves showing their support for both fighters.
