Devon Alexander vs Andre Berto: One final stand
This weekend we’ll be treated to a crossroads battle between former welterweight champions Devon Alexander and Andre Berto. Both guys have seen better days and are looking to re-establish themselves as players in a loaded welterweight division.
Let’s take a look at the two combatants.
Alexander is a former two division champion as at junior welterweight and welterweight. He looked exceptional in his last fight against Victor Ortiz. The bout was ruled a draw, but many felt that Alexander should have walked away with a well-earned decision. He’s 1–1 since returning from a 25 month layoff with his sights set on a title opportunity in the near future. However, he must first overcome a formidable obstacle in Berto.
Berto returns from a 16 month layoff after suffering a 9th round stoppage at the hands of Shawn Porter. In that fight, he looked old and like a guy who simply couldn’t pull the trigger. At this point, in their careers this is an even match-up.
My confidence lies with Alexander, because I feel that he has a bit more left in the tank. I also believe he has benefited from the long layoff.
Berto has really taken some beatings the last few years, and tends to encourage rugged back and forth battles. I expect Alexander to be sharp and on his toes; avoiding such engagements.
Looking ahead, I’m leaning towards the St Louis native to win by decision and keep his title dreams alive.
