Eleider Alvarez Defeats Michael Seals By Spectacular One-Punch KO!
A rather mundane contest turned into an early candidate for Knockout of the Year! Eleider Alvarez (25-1, 13 KOs) scored a spectacular 7th round knockout over Michael Seals (24-3, 18 KOs) at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York.
Through the first four rounds, the action could be described in three words: careful, cautious and slow. Knowing he was facing a power-puncher, Alvarez was very measured in his approach.
He kept the fight at a distance with the jab and combinations from the outside. Meanwhile, Seals patiently stalked looking to set up his vaunted right-hand.
Tall for the division at 6’3”, the 37 year-old Seals started late in this sport and his lack of experience showed throughout. In spite of carrying a 3-inch advantage in height and a 4-inch advantage in reach, he didn’t seem to have the ability to use his length effectively against the 35-year-old former WBO World Light Heavyweight champion during rounds five and six.
By the seventh round, Alvarez was in control. He continued to land the jab and begin to sit down on his power punches. Then suddenly, with five seconds left in the round, he landed with a titanic right-hand square on the chin that put Seals down and out!
With the win, the fighter known as “Storm” will now move on to next face Joe Smith Jr for the vacant WBO Light Heavyweight championship later on in 2020.
