Could Canelo Alvarez v Avni Yildirim takes place on Showtime?
With four-division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (53-1-2, 36KOs) set to face WBC super middleweight mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim (21-2, 12KOs) for the vacant title, the fight needs a network to televise it. With DAZN reportedly declining to air the fight, team Yildirim has already enlisted powerful advisor Al Haymon to conduct negotiations on behalf of Yildirim. This is all according to his manager Ahmet Oner.
Ahmet Oner said the following to BILD.com.
“I have now contacted the well known promoter Al Haymon. He will negotiate for us. His partner in the TV sector is Showtime. If no agreement is reached by September 22, the fight will be auctioned off. We’re going to bid $ 40 million.”
If DAZN continues to stand firm in their decision to not approve Yildirim for Canelo, a huge monkey wrench could be thrown. For one, representatives on Yildirim’s behalf could win the right to promote the fight. With Haymon working closely with Showtime, Canelo fighting on their network again would be huge even if it’s for only one fight. September 22 will be a key date to keep your eyes on.
3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they becomes available.
