Alycia Baumgardner Sends A Message To Mikaela Mayer
Bad blood will be settled in the ring on September 10 when WBC junior lightweight champion Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner (12-0, 7 KOs) squares off against IBF/WBO champ Mikaela Mayer (17-0, 5 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London, England.
With this being a women’s unification, each has promised to bring their A-game. During an appearance on the Best Women’s Boxing Show PERIOD podcast, the WBC champ talked about her focus heading into the biggest fight of her career.
PREPARED FOR BATTLE
“This fight plays into my head daily. I’m like, ‘what am I gonna do to this girl?’ She only has three options. The towel’s getting thrown in, the ref is stopping it, or I’m knocking her out. Those are my only three options. I’m here to destroy this girl with everything. I’m putting everything on the floor.
“I do not like this girl. She thinks she’s better than me. I’m gonna show her, and I’m going to humble her and let her know what time it is, that you was in there with a different animal. At the end of the day, you’re going to respect me. You’re gonna want to thank me, and I’m going to say, you’re welcome.”
Mayer’s best asset is her versatility. She dug deep and engaged in phone-booth warfare to win the IBF belt Maiva Hamadouche in October 2021. But in her last outing against Jennifer Han in April, Mayer put on a boxing display. Baumgardner says it doesn’t matter what her rival does on fight night. She says her previous opponents have sufficiently prepared her for whatever Mayer has up her sleeve.
This fight is the co-main of an all-female card headlined by the grudge match between middleweight champions Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall. Baumgardner said she’s proud to fight on such a stage, feeling that it’s a big boost for women’s boxing and the sport as a whole.
PLANNING TO BRING THE PAIN
But the primary goal is taking care of business against Mayer. After years of back and forth trash-talk, it all comes down to September 10. As far as “The Bomb” is concerned, she plans on giving Mayer the beating of her life.
“Mikaela Mayer, you know what time it is; I’m gonna dog-walk you. I’m going to make you do what I want you to do. You think I only got a right hand. Baby, you are in for a surprise.
I’m going to hit you so fucking hard in your face…break your nose, hopefully, your jaw or something. I’m gonna make you go home with a messed up face that you’re gonna have to recover for quite some time.”
