Demetrius Andrade successfully defends the WBO title
Undefeated WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade would defend his title against Artur Akavov.
Andrade built everything off the jab. He threw combinations that kept the challenger on the back foot.
His technique involved superior footwork by switching from offense to defense with ease. He followed with counters and finished with hooks to the body.
Akavov couldn’t find the range because of the jab and footwork of the champion. The only bright spot was a short left hook that landed on the inside.
The champion turned it up in the middle rounds, attacking with flurries ending by going to the body. Even with the opponent in survival mode, he was still was able to take advantage of the situation by landing sharp counters.
Andrade was in complete control of the fight.
There was weird moment where the referee, for some strange reason, stopped the fight in the last round.
Akavov wasn’t in any danger at all. Plus, the fight was only seconds away from being over. Promoter Lou DiBella didn’t hesitate venting his frustration with the referee.
Even without the strange ending, he was still going to win. However, the bigger question is whether this performance was enough to attract the bigger names?
