Demetrius Andrade forcefully calls out Jermell Charlo

On April 17, WBO World Middleweight champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (29-0, 18 KO’s) will face Liam “The Machine” Williams (23-2-1, 18 KO’s). It is not a fight that Andrade wants or what most in the boxing world want to see. It is no secret that the highly-skilled world champion is capable of giving any of the top fighters problems in the ring. The bedeviling aspect of Andrade’s situation comes into play when signing for a fight. For whatever the reason, he has been unable to pen a significant bout with a fellow big name.

For years, Andrade has called for the top tier opposition with no satisfaction. The Rhode Island native has not called out anybody with the persistence and longevity that he has Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Regardless of his dogged dedication, Boo Boo’s effort to snag that fight has remained fruitless. Luckily, Andrade does not succumb to melancholy and morose emotions easily. Rather than burn up time thinking about these professional blockages, Andrade would rather search for open road opportunities. One notable bout that he thinks is feasible is facing WBC World Super Welterweight champion Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo (34-1, 18 KO’s).

FACE ME!

The two were slated to go head-to-head nearly six years ago on December 13, 2014. About a month before fight night however, Andrade dropped out due to promotional and financial reasons. The late dissolvement of the bout was bitter to everyone involved, including the fighters. Sadly, the fight was never rescheduled. Since that time, both Charlo brothers and have nurtured a strong and potent disdain for Boo Boo. This open animosity has not prevented Andrade from continuing to call for a showdown with either brother.

In a recent session on the Last Stand Podcast with Brain Custer, Andrade doubled down on his willingness to lock horns.

“I can never get back down to 154, but any of them 154, Charlo! ’54, if you want to come on up bro we can make it happen. Don’t sit there an be like, “I’ll fight Demetrius but it has to be at 154.” Come on up! You can fight with me, you can fight for my belt, I have a belt. It’ll be worth your while and we can make it happen!”

NOTHING BUT SPACE AND OPPORTUNITY

One of the seemingly bigger hurdles in making this entertaining fight is determining where it would be aired. Andrade is promoted by DAZN while Charlo is with the PBC. It will be telling to see what happens in the near future with these two fighters. As mentioned earlier, Boo Boo already has an upcoming April fight on the books. After that dust-up, Andrade is once again free to face whomever he would like.

For the fan’s sake, I hope that something can be done to hook up a Andrade v Charlo prizefight. And if everything that Boo Boo said is on the level, and there are no promotional/network/weight issues, let’s make that happen!
