Francisco Veron Beats Angel Ruiz to Advance Toward Minor Title
In a junior middleweight tournament for a shot at the WBC silver title, Francisco “Bebu” Veron (14-0, 10KO) outworked Angel “Relampago” Ruiz (18-3-1, 13KO).
Bebu was on fire early, landing hard shots to both the body and head of an over-aggressive Relampago. He did a good job of making sure to end every round strong.
Ruiz came marching back behind a power jab that began to cause swelling on the right eye of Veron. Despite getting outworked, he landed the more eye-catching shots that hurt the Argentinian a few times going into the middle rounds.
As the fight continued, both men were having success. Ruiz was landing hard shots and decent counters but was getting outworked. A decorated amateur, Veron used footwork, defense, and a high work-rate to keep Ruiz at bay. He even started going to the body, which took some of the steam off the Mexican’s power shots.
As the fight was coming to a close, it was all Veron attacking and throwing punches like a video game player in cheat mode. He refused to allow his opponent to get any momentum and responded every time he got hit with a hard shot.
The judge’s scorecards were 100-90, 99-91, and 96-94 in favor of Veron, who advances to the next round of the Overtime Boxing tournament.
