Barboza Defeats Ramirez By UD; Title Shot Could Be Next
In a junior welterweight battle with a possible title shot next, Arnold Barboza Jr (31-0, 11KO) outboxxed one-time unified champion Jose Ramirez (29-2, 18KO) for the decision.
Despite fighting off the back foot, Barboza worked well off the jab and landed counter shots. His defense was sharper in the early going, slipping off the ropes to avoid return fire.
Ramirez struggled to find a rhythm as he slowly let his hands go and scored with the right hand. In the corner, his team begged for more offense.
Although this fight didn’t have much action, Barboza continued to fight behind that educated jab. He started finding a home for the uppercut and went to the body at the end of each combination.
Ramirez came alive in the closing rounds by applying pressure and landing solid counter shots. Yet, he kept getting caught by the jab right-hand combination.
In the end, Barboza walked away with a unanimous decision after the judges scored 97-93, and 96-94 twice. With this fight in the books, he quickly called for a title shot.
