Askin vs Okolie in talks for the British cruiserweight title.
It is being rumored that the BBBoC has ordered another top quality, domestic level championship bout. Matty Askin could be on a collision course with fellow countryman Lawrence Okolie in a highly anticipated fight.
Askin, (23-3-1, 15 KOs), was an amateur standout, winning the 2008 Senior ABA champion at cruiserweight. The early part of his career has seen a few setbacks since becoming a pro, but it has recovered nicely.
The 6’4, 29 year old British fighter nicknamed “The Assassin” suffered his first lost to Jon-Lewis Dickinson back in 2012. His last defeat came in 2015 at the hands of Ovill Mckenzie. However, a six-fight win streak, including winning the BBBoC British Cruiserweight title and two consecutive knockout victories has built a buzz around his name again.
Okolie (9-0, 7 KOs) also had a stellar amateur career, featuring an outstanding showing in the 2016 Rio Olympics. He turned pro March 2017 and has been on a string of knockout-dominated victories.
This 25 year old fighter stand 6’5 with an incredible reach of 82 1/2 inches. He won his first title opportunity for the WBA Continental Cruiserweight title in March 2018 in a rivalry fight against Isaac Chamberlain. Three month later, he followed that performance by winning the Commonwealth title in a statement knockout victory against undefeated Luke Watkins.
It seems that the UK fight circuit isn’t playing games about making quality fights. Should this fight get made, it will be another example of just that.
