BBBofC Calls Off Mayer vs Linardatou Fight Over Boxing License
The British Board Boxing Of Control strikes again as the lightweight match-up between former junior lightweight champion Mikaela Mayer (17-1, 5KO) and two-time junior welterweight champion Christina Linardatou (14-1, 7KO) has been cancelled.
According to Fight Freaks Unite, the BBBOfC refused to issue Lindartou a boxing license due to a permanent lens she has in her eye. Moreover, Linardatou has fought an entire career with it and the BBBOfC had no problems issuing her a license to fight Katie Taylor with the same lens in 2019. So, it begs the question: why now? The organization’s decision seems very hypocritical.
This is a major blow to both fighters as the winner could have received a chance to fight undisputed junior lightweight champion Alycia Baumgardner. Furthermore, the two-time champion is the one who handed the undisputed champion the first defeat on her record in 2018.
Christina Linardatou has to feel quite devastated by this as she wanted to use this fight to show that she has returned to form after taking a two-year hiatus, from 2020 to 2022, due to being pregnant.
LINARDATOU WAS READY TO RETURN STRONGER
During an interview with Women’s Fight News, she displayed excitement about returning to the ring in a high-level fight.
“I feel great. I feel great that I’m back in the game in a top fight. I vacated my title because of being pregnant . . . I feel ready. I [prepared] myself so hard, and that’s the point that gives me something more, because I have been through hell to come here . . . All this is a process to see myself again the same that I was – make me even better . . . I feel stronger, you’ll see that on Saturday.”
As of the writing of this article, it is unclear if Mikaela Mayer has received a replacement opponent.
