Benavidez set to return to the ring in March!
Former WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez will likely return in March according to his promoter Sampson Lewkowicz.
The undefeated 21 year-old has endured a whirlwind of issues recently. In May he signed a short lived promotional deal with Top Rank. Irreconcilable differences between the two saw him pay back the $250,000 signing bonus.
In September he tested positive for benzoylecgonine; the main ingredient in cocaine. He since admitted to his drug usage and apologized to his fans.
Consequently, the WBC relegated him to “champion in recess” status. This means the title is available for another contender to claim, however, Benavidez will be the immediate mandatory when he returns.
Therefore, he’ll look to face the winner of the Anthony Dirrell vs Avni Yildirim WBC title bout after his March return.
