Conor Benn’s Excuse On Not Facing Jaron Ennis Is Weak

Welterweight contender Conor “The Destroyer” Benn (23-0, 14KO) tired reason for not being interested in fighting IBF champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis (33-0, 29KO) should come under heavy criticism.

Fighters in the sport of boxing continuously disappoint with phrases they use when they are going to duck another fighter. The most used phrase by fighters is “What have they done, or no one knows who they are.” These two statements make pundits and fans sign in disbelief, knowing what may come next.

SAME OLD TIRED STATEMENT

While speaking with Fight Hub TV, Benn was eager to reveal a fight with WBC champion Mario Barrios could be next. However, his demeanor quickly changed when asked about a possible showdown with Ennis.

“There ain’t many massive names in boxing. Who knows who Boots is?…everyone is familiar with the Benn names over there in the States. Ennis comes to England, no one knows who he is apart from the boxing community.”

“If you saying big names. I don’t look at him and go big names. I look at big names and go, Pacquiao, Broner, Kell Brooks, and the Khans. Characters, people who invest in personality.”

HE NEEDS TO KEEP THE SAME ENERGY

In fairness, it’s worth mentioning the Brit was open to fighting Ennis in the past. The reality is it’s not up to Ennis to bring the fans to the arena if they were to fight in the U.K. Furthermore, Benn has benefited off his fathers Nigel Benn’s accomplishments in the sport.

He doesn’t seem to express those same sentiments when it comes to fighting Barrios, who is less known in boxing than Ennis. In this author’s opinion it’s funny how he doesn’t have the same energy when facing much lesser opposition. You would think Benn would be eager to fight the Philadelphian after a lackluster performance against Karen Chukhadzhian.

What makes Benn’s comment absurd is a victory over Ennis in a possible unification would do wonders for his legacy.
