Billy Joe Saunders Inviting Trouble Once Again
When in the ring, WBO world super middleweight champion “Superb” Billy Joe Saunders (29-0, 14 KO’s) is undeniably a talented fighter with a flair for defensive prowess. On the outside of the ring however, Saunders is constantly making himself available for needless attacks. Being the humor loving guy that he is, Saunders is quick to crack jokes with his fellow fighters and reporters. One would be hard-pressed to find an interview where he is not poking some kind of fun.
However, this same glib and carefree demeanor has frequently landed him in hot water. And once again, Superb has proven to be his own worst enemy. This time, he made a social media post, supposedly in good fun, that has taken a turn for the worst. In the video, Saunders uses a heavy bag to instruct men on how to knockout their women folk when they become to annoying during this mandated time of quarantine.
To be fair, the post did come off as tongue in cheek style humor. Yet with the social climate in this modern day and age, jokes of this variety just don’t fly any more. As a result, there has been such a notable backlash that Saunders has already issued a retraction and apology for his careless flub.
SLOW STUDY
This is not the first time that Saunders has traveled down a similar road. Back in 2018, Superb found himself apologizing for another crass social media post. Yet, in that situation there was far less wiggle room to say that it was all ‘just’ a joke. During that instance, Saunders and a friend tricked a female drug addict into striking a random passerby with the promise of a hit of crack.
After the woman does actually hit a man, Saunders and his buddy laugh hysterically then zoom off in Saunders’ car. Obviously, there was little defense for this rather vile act. Just a couple weeks before this incident, Superb invalidated himself to compete in an major fight with WBO world middleweight champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (29-0, 18 KO’s).
Saunders accomplished this by providing an adverse drug finding due to what he says resulted from a common nasal spray. Just a couple of months before the PED fiasco, Billy Joe Saunders was a central figure in another infamous video that went viral.
This time, Saunders and some others approached former WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (42-1-1, 41 KO’s) and his entourage, who were eating in a restaurant. After a few words were exchanged, the situation got out of hand at break-neck speed. In the end, Superb and his associates were chased out of the establishment and into the night.
Ultimately, he and Wilder would bury any beef that they had, but there is no question that Saunders has not figured out how to stay out of the social media hot seat!
