Boxing Returns To NBC!
According to The Athletic, boxing is making its return to NBC with a series of shows set to debut on November 17. Follow-up shows are also planned for December 3 and 17, with more to come in 2021.
NBC plans to work with sports media platform Ring City and will feature boxers from promoters such as Lou DiBella, Salita Promotions, and others. The interesting thing is that NBC is not looking to sign fighters to exclusive television deals. Their hope is to stage the best fights possible.
The broadcasting company used to be a stable home for the sport. For them, it was nothing during the decades of the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s to air cards during the weekends throughout the year. However, as boxing became less and less of a mainstream sport, NBC’s interest in the sport waned. The network tried to make a foray back into the sport when they struck a deal with PBC in 2015. Unfortunately, that merger didn’t sustain itself and PBC eventually moved to Fox Sports in 2018.
Here’s hoping that this new venture between NBC and Ring City will bear long-lasting success. Competition is always a good thing and the sport is needed on as many platforms as possible for it to truly thrive. And for elder fans, if this works out, it’s a return to the good-old-days.
