Bozy Ennis Explains Why Boots Signed Up with Matchroom
The boxing public continues to talk about IBF welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis (31-0, 28KO) signing with Matchroom Boxing. Trainer and father Derek “Bozy” Ennis explains what ultimately led to them aligning themselves with the British-based company.
Boxing fans quickly questioned if Boots joining Eddie Hearn’s stable of fighters at Matchroom Boxing was a smart move. When looking at the division he could have a hard time becoming undisputed with Premier Boxing Champions and Top Rank on the verge of grabbing the other titles.
ACTIVITY WAS THE REASON FOR SIGNING
While speaking to YSM Sports Media, Bozy stated that it was the interest of being active that went into their decision to sign with Matchroom.
“We couldn’t be sitting around waiting too long, man. We were supposed to fight in March, then we were supposed to fight in June. We don’t know what date cuz they were moving the dates.”
“I don’t know what they were trying to do, it took a long time, so we just moved on … that’s always the main thing is activity man, stay busy. The busier you are the sharper you’ll be. We used to fight three times a year.”
“Matchroom, they moving fighters.”

The elder Ennis has a valid point that fighters need to stay busy to remain sharp. The last time the Philadephian was in the ring was in a thrilling tenth-round stoppage of Roiman Villa in July 2023.
Former WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker is the perfect example. He fought four times in 2023, which explained why he looked so sharp en route to upsetting Deontay Wilder.
In this author’s opinion, the only issue is getting the IBF quality opponents. Yes, staying busy is important but if he is fighting subpar opposition it defeats the purpose.
