Boots vs Mario Barrios Hits the Radar for Bozy Ennis
In the welterweight division, the interim champions are itching for action. IBF’s Jaron “Boots” Ennis (31-0, 28KO) and WBC’s Mario “El Azteca” Barrios (28-2, 18KO) could step into the ring as Ennis’ father and trainer, Derek “Bozy” Ennis, is very enthusiastic on making the fight.
While the division holds its breath for the planned rematch between undisputed champion Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr., Team Ennis is not content to wait. They want to stay active, and the prospect of a bout with El Azteca is on their radar.
Speaking with YSM Sports Media, Bozy expressed his willingness to make a fight with Barrios happen without hesitation.
“Mario Barrios? Oh, without a doubt, yeah. That’s the fight I would take in a heartbeat. That could be next, if they want it.”
To be fair, Barrios hasn’t shied away from the idea of taking on Ennis either. On September 30, he grabbed the WBC Interim belt by defeating former champion Yordenis Ugas.
Boots is often regarded as the boogeyman of the division, known for the high risk he poses to potential opponents with low rewards. This reputation has made it challenging for him to secure fights against some of the more prominent names in the division. Nevertheless, on July 8, he displayed his skill by becoming the first fighter to stop the durable Roiman Villa.
Depending on how events unfold in the anticipated rematch between undisputed champion Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr., the interim champions could find themselves elevated to full champion status.
This could pave the way for a significant unification bout featuring Ennis and Barrios in the near future. Boxing fans have a lot to look forward to in the welterweight division.
