Burns shows the world he still has it!
Former three-division champion Ricky Burns returns at the age of 35 with a big statement. Many believed the former champion’s career was on the verge of being over after losing two of his last five.
The performance he put on against Scott Cardle showed he is far from done!
The two measured each other early on; Cardle looking to establish prowess at mid-range while Burns looked to work the jab on the outside. The underdog had a problem with jumping in with looping shots from the start, therefore, it was only a matter of time before he would get countered.
The veteran from Scotland took his time and kept himself poised against his aggressive opponent. The patience started to pay dividends as damage became visible on and around the left eye of Cardle in as early as the second round.
Things seemed to drag along when suddenly, BOOM! A counter right hand from Burns as Cardle jumped in landed right on the back of the jaw. The legs of the underdog would stiffen as he fell to the canvas. He struggled to beat the count, but made it to his feet at eight.
However, a stumbling Cardle did could not convince the referee to allow the fight to continue. As bloody man, he would effectively help reinvigorate the career of Burns.
The former world champion would improve to 43-7-1, with 16 knockouts. While he did not call anyone out at junior welterweight, he made the division aware that he is still a viable contender.
