David Benavidez Can Build Buzz by Stopping Callum Smith
Matchroom Boxing’s Chairman Eddie Hearn turned up the buzz meter on boxing by revealing a fight could be on the horizon featuring Callum “Mundo” Smith and WBC light heavyweight champion David “The Monster” Benavidez.
It is not a great fight, but it’s a fight that should happen. Right now, the division is at a standstill while everyone waits on the trilogy between Artur Beterbiev and unified champion Dmitry Bivol. Mundo managed to get back into the title picture by defeating former WBO interim champion Joshua Buatsi.
Benavidez was elevated to full champion by the WBC shortly after Bivol won the rematch against Beterbiev on February 22. In addition, The Monster picked up the WBA Regular title by defeating David Morrell on February 1.
It only makes sense to make this fight happen, considering nothing is moving in the division right now. Moreover, Smith gets a chance to become a two-division champion.
In this author’s opinion, this is a fight where Benavidez needs to shine, as some view him as the most dangerous fighter in the division. The WBC champion has all the tools to become the second man to stop Mundo impressively.
Let’s hope all parties involved can come together to make the fight a reality.
