Canelo Alvarez vs Caleb Plant Negotiations Cease!
According to ESPN, the super fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Caleb “Sweethands” Plant to crown an undisputed champion is off…again! Unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KO’s) first entered the division with well-publicized goals of domination. The Mexican superstar wanted to be undisputed and he let his desire be known. Gobbling up the WBA, WBC and WBO straps were not that difficult for the redhead whatsoever. However, getting the opportunity for the fourth and final title has not been so easy.
IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant (21-0, 12 KO’s) first passed up the opportunity to fight Canelo back in May 2020. At that point in time Plant was unwilling to face such a challenge with less than a full camp. When Sweet Hands stepped to the side, Canelo went on to face and defeat Callum Smith for his WBA title. More recently, when talks resumed it was Team Canelo who had an issue with the stipulations. Apparently, Canelo would have to sign on for a three fight deal with PBC, which was something that he was not willing to do.
Once it was understood that the unified champ would not budge, the three-fight stipulation was removed and talks resumed. Sadly, the negotiations have broken down all over again. An unidentified clause in the contract has led the two teams to their most recent fork in the road. The situation is a bit more critical because Team Canelo wants the fight signed for as quickly as possible so the fight can land on his traditional Mexican Independence Weekend. Naturally, the haggling between the two teams can resume at any time. Yet, due to the rocky history of trying to get this fight finalized it’s looking more unlikely by the minute.
Regardless of what is to come next for both fighters, 3kingsboxing will be there to report the news!
